On Tuesday, I did a webinar (which you can still watch until this Sunday, July 20 by clicking here) about how to create a coaching business to fit your ideal lifestyle. It was awesome and the feedback was incredible.
Based on the feedback I received, there were a few things in particular that really stood out for some people in helping them fast track their journey to success. I wanted to take one of those concepts and expand on them in a blog post for you because I believe it is a big one that most coaches (actually most people in general), struggle with. I know for myself this was something that held me back until I learned to ease my way out of it.
Do you ever find yourself in a position where you are wondering any of the following:
- How come I’m not there yet?
- Where’s the money?
- Where are my clients?
- She did it in 2 years and I’m in year 3 and not even close, what’s wrong with me?
If any of these sound vaguely familiar, then I can tell you without a shadow of doubt, this is one of the biggest reasons you are not yet where you want to be...

You came across my mind today, as you do many days (I’m forever grateful for my online community). As you read this I am 5 months into my 6 month South American adventure. There is something that I have realized on this trip and it’s so important that I had to pass it on to you. I hope you take 5 minutes to read this blog - I think you will be happy you did.
So much has happened on this journey and there have been a lot of highs and a few lows. As you probably know last year on August 20, 2013, I lost my father. It was unexpected, fast and a whirlwind of emotion.
I had decided to move to South America before we had any inclination that dad was sick. You see, my business had gotten to the point (and not to mention I was 32 at the time and all of my friends were either home-owners, getting married, having babies and/or a combination of them), where I felt the pressure. It was time to buy a house, a car, invest in this and do that.
And I almost did it. But then I remembered something...
While having those things are great for some people, I didn’t want them.
They weren’t my dreams...

Recently, after launching my new training book, 10 Steps To Stop Struggling & Start Thriving In Your Coaching Business, I have been talking to a lot of self-help coaches who are new to the industry and just getting settled into their businesses.
There have been some interesting dialogue happening but one topic that seems to arise, especially with coaches who have yet to really put themselves out there, is ‘the dark side of marketing’. It seems as though marketing has gotten a bad rap lately and I, being a proud marketer, feel it is time to open up the dialogue on the truth about marketing.
Many coaches seem to think marketing is bad because they feel like they are somehow manipulating people into buying things they don’t need. That marketing is like luring people into a dark cave where they will never, ever be seen again.

“She’s way too young, she could never help me.”
“You’ve got to be kidding, I was an adult when she was born.”
“Your first year in business? You’re just getting your feet wet. There is no way you can help me with my problems.”
If you are a younger coach (either by age or experience) you might have had one of those awkward moments where you are not treated fairly due to your lack of experience (or someone’s perception of your inexperience). Perhaps someone said one of the sentences above to you or worse, danced around the issue when what they really meant to say was….
“Who do you think you are coaching people without more experience?”
(I’ve actually heard this one first hand… yep).
When this happens, it can leave you feeling angry, hurt, frustrated and down right mad. Just because you are young doesn’t make you less qualified. Does it?
Just because you haven’t been in the game a decade yet does’t mean you aren’t great at what you do. Does it?
