If you ever feel anxious about your business, you are going to love this week’s blog.
As you are building your business some things are going to work and some are not. Right now, I invite you to think about something in your life that you have gotten that was significant. When you began that journey, you probably had in your minds eye how it was going to unfold.
But how many times in life do things unfold the way we think they are going to? The unanimous answer is... ‘never’!! haha
You can imagine how a vacation or evening out may happen and it never tends to unfold the way we thought it was going to. Now sometimes things come to be in a way that is much better than we ever could have imagined and sometimes it is not as great as we had imagined.
If there is one thing I can promise you about growing your business, it's this:
It will not unfold in the way that you think it will.
It may begin that way, but without a doubt things will begin to shift and change quite differently then you imagined. This is simply because when you start something (especially something big like a business), you just don’t have all of the information in the beginning and therefore, how can you know how it will all unfold? You can’t!
But if you allow it... it can be better than you ever dreamed possible!
---> However, in order for that “better than you imagined” to happen, you must play the long term game.
Often I see coaches getting upset when things like this happen:
- a potential client doesn’t sign up
- someone signs up and leaves
- a launch doesn’t do well
- they want to speak at an event but they don’t get chosen
When this happens, they do what my mother used to tell me not to do… “Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill, Jennifer”… (thanks mom!).
It is funny how as you get older you realize much of your parents advice was actually pretty good... but I digress...
When you are focused on the short term game, those things matter. Problem is, then you are easily get upset, frustrated, and angry.
What happens then? You’re out of alignment and you can’t perform at your best which then leads you to not getting the best results and slowing down your ability to succeed!
HOWEVER, when you are playing the long term game and something goes ‘not according to plan’, then you quickly learn from it, let it go and move on to the next thing because you know that that is a part of the deal.
This is a rule that all great coaches and CEO’s understand. A short term loss or what seems like a setback is not a setback in the long term. In the long term, it’s all part and part of the equation of ultimate success.
It is a skill to learn how to focus on what is working and where you are going versus what isn’t working and how hard it is.
When you are not worried about what isn’t working then you are not in a negative energetic space and you are able to move forward without staying stuck in a bad headspace.
---> That is how you win in the short term… you let go of things quickly and move forward. <---
It’s a lot like dating.
When you are fixated on a relationship that didn’t work, you put up an energetic wall that literally blocks a new person who is a better match for you from showing up.
The same thing happens in your business. When you focus on what isn’t working and how hard it is and that you don’t know everything, you literally block out the next great idea, client or resource from coming to you because you are focused on the problem, not the solution.
Focus on the long term game so that short term losses are easily handled and moved on from.
Now, I would love to hear from you. Have you been playing the short term game (versus the long term?)
I'd love to hear about it in the comments below.
